The Brett Favre factor helped to boost ESPN’s ratings for its Monday Night Football telecast, as the Minnesota Vikings’ 17-10 win over the Houston Texans this past Monday pulled in a 6.0 rating and an average of 5.943 million households and 7.918 million viewers.
The results made the game the network’s most-viewed National Football League preseason game ever and its highest rated since the New England Patriots visited the Dallas Cowboys Aug. 12, 1996, and earned a 6.6 rating.
ESPN’s four preseason games in August averaged a 4.3 rating, 4.233 million households, and 5.516 million viewers, up 41%, 45%, and 44%, respectively, over the 2008 preseason schedule. The four-game average marked the highest-rated preseason for ESPN since 2006 (4.6 rating) and the second-highest-rated of the past 15 seasons, as well as ESPN’s most-viewed NFL preseason ever.
