The New York Giants broke in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, with a last-second victory over the hometown Dallas Cowboys, and NBC earned the best overnight ratings for a primetime National Football League game in 11 years, crushing the ratings for the Primetime Emmy Awards on CBS.

Sunday Night Football earned a 16.5 overnight rating and 27 share, while the Emmys posted a 10.0. Head-to-head, football topped awards with a 16.6/26 compared with a 9.7/15.

The last primetime NFL game to earn a higher rating was the Denver Broncos at the Miami Dolphins Dec. 21, 1998, which pulled a 17.4/27.

Dallas was the top metered market for the game, posting a 41.7/61. Sunday Night Football did not fare as well in New York, which tied for the No. 13 spot with a 19.3/31.
