The Kansas City Royals and Kauffman Stadium will reportedly play host to the 2012 MLB All-Star Game. Comcast SportsNet New England reported the news on its site this week, stating that an official announcement could come as early as next month’s league’s Winter Meetings. The Boston Red Sox, which hosted the event in 1999, had hoped to land the game to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park. However, the league has apparently decided on Kauffman Stadium, which underwent major renovations before the start of last season…
…Dallas’s Reunion Arena went down without much of a fight. The venerable 29-year-old sports arena took one final breath, then collapsed inward in a wavelike formation at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17. The process had been expected to take as long as three days, but the roof wound up coming down about eight hours into the demolition process. “Until you know how the structure is going to react, it could have taken longer, or it could have come down like it did,” said Martha Welch, senior architect for the city of Dallas, adding that the demolition went as planned…
…The city of San Diego’s downtown redevelopment arm agreed to pay a consulting firm $160,000 this week to study how to pay for a new downtown football stadium. A contract with Evolution Media Capital LLC is expected to be in place by week’s end, allowing New York-based sports-finance consultant Mitchell Ziets to cobble together what may be an $800 million stadium spending plan. A final report may come in 90-120 days, said Fred Maas, board chairman of the Centre City Development Corp. The vote was unanimous, with one abstention…
…The Minnesota Vikings vehemently rejected a proposal from their landlord to extend their lease at the Metrodome, telling the stadium’s operator in a letter this week that the plan threatens the team’s future in the state. The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission’s finance committee, chaired by Paul Thatcher, on Tuesday approved a resolution it said would buy time for the Vikings to secure a new stadium. The lagging economy and a state budget deficit have clouded the political prospects of allocating public money for a rebuilt facility. The team’s lease expires after the 2011 season, and the MSFC’s proposal would keep the Vikings in the dome at least two more seasons, with year-to-year renewal options after that…
…Sacramento, CA, Mayor Kevin Johnson announced this week that his arena task force will be led by political consultant/PR executive Chris Lehane and restaurateur Lina Fat. The citizens’ task force that will evaluate proposals to build a new sports and entertainment complex in Sacramento also includes 10 other business and community leaders. They will work for free. Johnson is calling the project Sacramento First. The mayor announced the task force on Oct. 29, saying that Cal Expo can’t be the only option as a site for a new arena and any sports and entertainment complex has to be about more than basketball and the Sacramento Kings…
…A key regional planning board gave final approval Nov. 19 to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s plan to spend $9 million in federal stimulus money to build a footbridge over Route 1 near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. The elaborate bridge had drawn opposition because it connects two parking lots privately owned by Robert Kraft, chairman/CEO of the New England Patriots. The decision bypassed the normal review process given to most regional highway projects that receive f
