Attendees at the 2010 College Sports Video Summit (CSVS) were treated to a lesson in history, and some glimpses into their futures, during a keynote address by Dr. Harvey Schiller. Opening the presentation of the College Sports Media Awards, the chairman/CEO of GlobalOptions Group told the audience just how important their jobs are.

“You really record the everyday life of not just athletes but institutions and everything else that goes on around your community,” he said. “Without you, that history disappears. You really do something that is important for everyone else. That memory is something that is everlasting.”

Schiller, who has held executive positions with the U.S. Olympic Committee, Turner Sports, and the Southeastern Conference, also indicated how important such gatherings can be for the 450 sports-video professionals attending the second-annual CSVS in Atlanta.

“Except for my time in the military, I never applied for a job,” he said. “Every single position I have received has been through some other association. For most of you, any job that you take in the future will not be reflected by your résumé; it really is who you’ve associated with outside of your career. On a day-to-day basis, it’s all about integrity, honor, and trust.”

Still, career accomplishments did play a role in the room on June 8 as 10 college sports-video productions were announced as winners of the 2010 College Sports Media Awards, recognizing excellence in their field. Schiller urged each of the college video departments that had submitted awards, even those who won, to hold themselves to a higher standard next year, to try not just to beat their competitors but to better their own achievements.

“Your job is to be creative and take a broadcast to a place that it’s never been before,” he said. “Let people be critical of that. Let people say that you’ve done something the wrong way. You can change the world.”
