The Sports Video Group hosted its largest West Coast event to date on Tuesday, with more than 300 broadcast professionals from the sports and entertainment industries descending on Club Nokia at LA LIVE in Los Angeles for the inaugural Sports Entertainment Summit.

The Summit, which was streamed live online, kicked off with an overview of the intersection between sports and entertainment and, more specifically, the increasing importance of entertainment elements — opening ceremonies, halftime shows, the red carpet — in sports events.

The event was highlighted by a show-stopping keynote speech by industry legend Don Ohlmeyer. The former president of NBC West Coast and current ESPN ombudsman recounted his days as producer of Monday Night Football and ABC Sports’ Olympics coverage, including an emotional description of his experience during the tragic massacre at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. He also offered his perspective on the current state of sports broadcasting and provided 10 tips for improving the industry as a whole.

Next up, a panel of broadcasters and vendors discussed the rapidly changing world of live sports-based studio shows, which have grown into full-blown on-site spectacles for such events as the Super Bowl and Daytona 500.

The afternoon sessions offered panels on 3DTV for both sports and entertainment, primetime sports production, and sports reality programming as well as keynote speeches by Fox Sports EVP of Programming & Production George Greenberg and AEG Digital Media President Michael Goldfine.

Intelsat served as the title sponsor, and Teranex was the Summit’s Diamond Sponsor. Gold Sponsors Newtek and Bexel provided the live streaming and A/V services for the event. 3ality Digital, Grass Valley, PNC Equipment Finance, Signiant, SOS Global Express, and Wohler served as Silver Sponsors, and event sponsor txtstation allowed attendees to text questions to the panelists in real time.

Friday’s SVG Update newsletter will feature additional coverage of the Sports Entertainment Summit. Full video of the day’s sessions will be posted on SVG TV in the coming weeks.
