According to CBS, the stream is believed to be the biggest-ever online audience for a college football game, with a total of 214,560 unique viewers through both website and mobile-device application interaction. There were 171,648 viewers who watched the game via the CBSSports.com website, and another 42,912 viewers who viewed the game via CBS Sports mobile using an app for Apple iOS devices (either an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch). Saturday’s broadcast is also proof that a strong web presence can co-exists with a traditional broadcast model as the game earned CBS their second-highest rated game since 1987…

…The New York Times is reporting that the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal could lead to the dismissal of Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno. The 84-year-old coach was schedule to hold his weekly news conference today but the university canceled it less than an hour before its start time. Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator under Paterno, has been charged with sexually abusing eight boys across a 15-year period, and Paterno has been widely criticized for failing to involve the police when he learned of an allegation of one assault of a young boy in 2002. Two top university officials — Gary Schultz, the senior vice president for finance and business, and Tim Curley, the athletic director — were charged with perjury and failure to report to authorities what they knew of the allegations, as required by state law. Both have stepped down.
