University of Maryland turned to Daktronics to design, manufacture and install new displays featuring LED technology in both the Xfinity Center and Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The installation at Xfinity Center is set for completion prior to the start of basketball season this fall.

University of Maryland Basketball 2014“We are in a highly-competitive marketplace and it is imperative that we continue to provide our fans with one of the best game-day environments in the country,” Maryland Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson said. “Through our research, the game-day atmosphere must be unique and special and something our fans can’t experience at home. This is an exciting time at the University of Maryland and we look forward to delivering a world-class fan experience in College Park.”

“We are excited to work with the University of Maryland and Daktronics to design and integrate the Terp’s New HD Video Production System which feeds both the Xfinity Center and Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium,” said Communications Engineering Inc. (CEI)Project Manager Matt Weiss. “The combination of the latest HD video technology in conjunction with the advanced Daktronics displays will bring the ultimate game-day experience to the Maryland fans.”

Xfinity Center will be receiving a new centerhung with two side displays measuring approximately 12.5 feet high by 33 feet wide and two end displays measuring approximately 9 feet high by 16.5 feet wide. All four sides of the centerhung will incorporate 6 millimeter line spacing. They are capable of showing one large image to highlight live video and instant replays. They can also be divided into separate windows to show a variety of vivid graphics, colorful animations, up-to-the-minute statistics, scoring information and sponsor advertisements.

Four message displays will also be installed in the Xfinity Center, one for each corner of the facility. These displays will each measure approximately 2.5 feet high by 16.5 feet wide and incorporate 15 millimeter line spacing. They will be used to supplement content on the main displays by relaying additional information to fans throughout events.

Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium will be receiving one large ribbon display that will measure approximately 3.5 feet high by 323 feet wide and one smaller ribbon display that will measure approximately 3.5 feet high by 125 feet wide. Both of these displays will incorporate a 15HD pixel layout. They will provide the opportunity to showcase sponsors throughout events and provide up-to-the-minute statistics and game information.

An additional two message displays will be installed beneath the east end zone video display on the left and right sides of the Gossett Football Teamhouse. These two message displays will each measure approximately 3.5 feet high by 16 feet wide and incorporate a 15HD pixel layout.

All of the displays provided by Daktronics will incorporate excellent image clarity and contrast with wide angle visibility to keep all Terps fans immersed in the game-day action. The outdoor displays will also provide multiple levels of protection from the elements.

“Daktronics is pleased to be a part of this exciting project at the University of Maryland. This is an important time in the history of Maryland Athletics and we are proud that Maryland Chose Daktronics to provide these exciting upgrades for Comcast Arena and Byrd Stadium,” said Regional Sales Manager Charley Bocklet. “Terp fans are sure to enjoy the game experience as they launch into their first season with the Big 10.”
