Panasonic Now Shipping VariCam35, VariCam HS Camera/Recorders

Panasonic has begun deliveries of its new VariCam35 and VariCam HS camera/recorders, which provide you with unparalleled tools for high-end filmmaking, commercials, TV episodics, sports casting, documentaries, and live events.

The VariCam 35 4K camera produces subtle, true-life colors and rich, smooth skin tones. The camera/recorder is equipped with a super 35mm MOS image sensor for 4096 x 2160 (17:9) 4K image capture and offers a choice of codecs – Apple ProRes 4:4:4:4, ProRes HQ or the Panasonic AVC-ULTRA family. It records simultaneously in multiple formats including 4K, UHD, 2K and HD, for unequaled flexibility. It offers 14 stops of dynamic range to provide full control over the widest lighting conditions; and delivers variable speed 4K recording up to 120fps. Plus it has native ISOs of 800 and 5000, with higher ISOs that can be set in camera.

The VariCam 35 affords in-camera color grading. Powerful color management capabilities provide an extended color gamut for impeccable image fidelity, and permit support for an Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) workflow for full fidelity mastering of original source material. The VariCam 35 also permits the assignment of various LUTs to individual recording channels and camera outputs.

The 2/3” VariCam HS camera/recorder features real-time high frame rate and off-speed recording to 240fps in 1080p for SFX slow-motion applications. The VariCam HS utilizes 1920 x 1080p 3MOS imagers with 14 stops of latitude to provide you full control over a wide range of lighting conditions for unparalleled 1080p native recording/operation. The camera features a range of high-quality recording formats including AVC-Intra Class 100 (recording as 1080/24p, 25, 30p, 50 or 60p with VFR up to 240p), AVC-Intra Class 200 (up to 30p/60i) and 12-bit sampled AVC-Intra Class 4:4:4 (up to 30p).

Both cameras feature an innovative two-piece design. The 4K and 2/3” camera heads are separate from but dockable to the common, shared recording module. This enables you to switch between S35mm and 2/3” camera heads to best suit your creative assignment, allowing “box” camera functionality for jibs, cranes and other remote camera needs.
