Fox Sports, Evertz, Game Creek Video Plan World’s First Remote-Production-Unit IP Routing

Fox Sports, Evertz Microsystems, and Game Creek Video announced today that they will be installing the world’s first large-scale IP-based routing system in a remote-production facility.

The Evertz EXE router will be installed in Fox Sports’ new Encore production unit currently being integrated at Game Creek Video’s headquarters in Hudson, NH. Encore is being built to facilitate Fox Sports’ coverage of USGA events, such as the Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and Senior Open tournaments. Encore will also be assigned to Fox’s primary NFL telecast each week as well as to its coverage of the Super Bowls in 2017, 2020, and 2023.

“While designing Encore in collaboration with Game Creek, we quickly realized the infrastructure required for the mobile unit could not be effectively handled with traditional SDI routing,” says Kevin M. Callahan, director, engineering and technology, Fox Sports Remote Operations. “After discussions with Evertz and Game Creek, they were collectively able to provide a solution around the Evertz EXE router and multiviewers that will serve us well into the future.”

Says Joe Cirincione, VP, sales, Evertz, “We are thrilled that Fox and Game Creek Video will be deploying Evertz Software Defined Video Network (SDVN) solution in their super set of IP-based trucks. Evertz SDVN runs on an uncompressed 10GE IP-based infrastructure, which facilitates the massive I/O needed for this project. At the core of the SDVN solution is Evertz 23-Tbps EXE video-service router, which supports over 6,900 channels I/O for routing between the multiple trucks and is managed by Evertz MAGNUM system controller. The trucks will also utilize Evertz 570IPG high-density IP gateways and the 3067VIP-10G multiviewer system, which is running 140 displays. This format-agnostic infrastructure will allow Fox/Game Creek Video to easily support 3G, UHD, 4K, and 8K resolutions now and in the future.”

Jason Taubman, VP, design and new technology, Game Creek Video, says, “Given the sheer number of video and audio sources that Fox asked us to provide in Encore and given that Evertz collaborated with us for solution to that requirement, the EXE routing product squarely hit the target for what we need. Fox Sports has always pushed the envelope for video and audio production, and this push challenged us beyond the bounds of baseband routing in a practical space for a mobile unit.

“This will allow us to meet current and future requirements in an efficient way, which is the hallmark of our engineering philosophy for all our customers,’” he continues. “Fox challenged us in 2006 to do something special, and they have challenged us again. Evertz’s EXE router helps us meet that challenge.”
