Baker Audio Visual Enhances Game-Day Experience at Philips Arena

Philips Arena began the 2014-15 season with new life in their technology showcase.  The 18,000+ seat arena, home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, WMBA’s Atlanta Dream, and many more top level events, revamped the approach on game-day audio and video.  Philips Arena recently underwent an audio system upgrade originated by audio-visual designer Mark Graham with WJHW and integration by Baker Audio Visual to replace the 15 year old audio system with an exploded cluster array design including eight six-box cluster arrays.

Each cluster array housed three mid-high and three low frequency PD series JBL speaker cabinets.  In addition to the cluster arrays, the installation called for 24 dual 18’’ diver subwoofer cabinets to provide low-end frequency support to drive the essence of the audio experience.  The entire digital audio processing design was changed to Harman BSS as well as a full amplifier overhaul to the Harman Crown series amplifier.

The project was compressed to a 60-day installation period with constant event schedules to work within. “Working in one of the busiest buildings in the US proves difficult to find time to work with no events in the arena.  At no time did anyone from Baker Audio Visual waiver with regard to our schedule. They worked nights, weekends and any free hour available to complete the sound system install. Baker Audio Visual worked as a true partner with our staff to ensure success,” said Barry Henson, VP of Operations at Philips Arena.  All new systems had to be closely coordinated with each other so that when the final switch over was to take place; everything was ready for show time.

“Projects of this caliber and magnitude do not happen on their own. It takes a team effort on all sides of the table. The Philips Arena staff was a pleasure to work with and we have something we can all be proud of. When the lights go down and the music starts we are all fans. Because we are passionate about our work it is import that we are not just installing equipment, we are giving our clients the ability to amaze!” said Baker Audio Visual’s Director of Operations, Chris Moore

The new sound system in conjunction with the new video and floor projection system has dramatically changed the fan experience.  “The new sound system has been a huge upgrade.  Fans can easily understand all of our video content, the PA is crystal clear, and it packs a real punch when needed.  You can feel the arena vibrate during our opening 3D Projection sequence, and it gives you goose bumps,” said David Schindler, VP of Production and Creative Services at Philips Arena.  Today’s sporting venues have to achieve the highest level of entertainment to stay competitive in today’s market with an overall goal of retaining their current fan base as well as attracting newcomers.  This experience is a must in things to do in Atlanta.”
