Texas Tech Taps Gensler to Design New Sports Facility

Gensler, a global design firm, was selected by Texas Tech University as the designer and architect of the Sports Performance Facility and Jones Stadium South End Zone Project.

The Sports Performance Facility will contain a world-class, 200-meter, banked track and an artificial turf field which will be used by the football team as well as other Texas Tech student-athletes.

The Jones Stadium renovation will consist of razing the existing south end zone building, which currently houses administrative offices for Athletics, and rebuilding with new suites and related premium spaces, team training table, and new large format video boards.

“Our focus is to enhance the student-athlete experience and to be part of the team focusing on elevating the Texas Tech Athletic environment through design. These projects are an outstanding opportunity for Gensler and Texas Tech University to create a shared vision,” said Byron Chambers, Design Director of Gensler Sports.

The Sports Performance Facility will be located on the site of the current, 30-year-old, Athletics Training Center. The new facility will be on par in every aspect with the newest peer facilities in the Big Twelve conference, but also with the best in the country.

Texas Tech University’s Athletic Director, Kirby Hocutt, stated, “We are excited to have Gensler on board with us as we continue to enhance our athletics facilities and provide the very best opportunities for our student-athletes and programs to compete for championships. Gensler’s work around the country and its work with the Dallas Cowboys’ new world headquarters in Frisco is outstanding. We are looking forward to our partnership with Gensler..”

Jonathan Kelley, AIA, of Gensler Sports stated, “We are extremely excited to have been chosen to work on such an important project for the University and the Athletic Department. The Sports Performance Facility will be potentially used by all student-athletes on campus and be a huge part of the recruiting efforts. We are honored to be a part of the process.”

Michael Molina, Architect and Vice Chancellor of Facilities for Texas Tech noted, “TTU Athletics and the Office of Facilities Planning & Construction is impressed and motivated to have Gensler as a part of the team for the Sports Performance Complex and South Jones Stadium initiatives. Gensler’s expertise in the collegiate athletics facility solutions arena is extraordinary and is directly in line with TTU ‘s quality standards both in the technical as well as the creative arenas. The design synergy surrounding the over-all initiative is electric!”
