SVG Summit Technology Showcase Preview: What To Expect, Part 1

The 2015 SVG Summit is fast approaching and will host more than 75 industry-leading vendors exhibiting their latest sports-production gear. In the weeks leading up to the Summit, SVG is highlighting the Technology Showcases that will be on display at the New York Hilton on Dec. 14 and 15.

AJA Video Systems
Among AJA’s powerful workflows for sports-broadcasting needs is the new Ki Pro Ultra recorder/player with 4K/UHD/2K/HD support and fiber-connectivity options. Ki Pro Ultra is a compact, portable recorder and player with rack-mount support (two can sit side by side on an optional 2RU shelf), suitable for OB trucks, offering flexibility for sports broadcasting with an HD display and a wealth of connectivity, including 3G-SDI and HDMI. For those seeking to integrate HD materials into emerging UHD broadcast workflows, AJA will also demonstrate the FS3 converter and frame sync with built-in adaptive scaling for HD to UHD needs. Mini-converter products on display will include the FiDO line of fiber converters, which allow long signal runs, and the ROI family of adaptive-scaling converters designed to integrate computer desktops into video pipelines.

Boland Communications
Designed for mobile broadcast large and small, Boland’s HD, OLED, and custom broadcast-monitor models include the company’s newest PVB and BVB Series lineups. In addition to standard features like built-in scopes (waveform, vector scope, RGB parade, meters), audio functionality (de-embedder, line-out, headphone jack), and native 1080 display rasters, custom designs maximize monitor-wall space, improve and ease eye-scan reaction, and simplify setup via remote-control adjustment of one or multiple units at the same time. Whether painting cameras with 3G-SDI PiP’s or doing one-pass calibrated color on the fly in postproduction, Boland offers specialty models for all mobile-broadcast needs.

Calrec Audio
Calrec’s Summa console is designed for broadcast professionals who need to produce broadcast audio easily but may not require as many resources as Calrec’s Apollo and Artemis consoles provide. Control is via a 17-in. multitouch screen inspired by familiar tablet technology, with a straightforward interface that uses established finger gestures for navigation. Summa’s control simplifies even complex workflow tasks, such as creating mix-minus feeds. Bluefin2 technology gives Summa a pool of 180 or 128 channel-processing paths, eight groups, four main outputs, 16 aux outputs, and 32 tracks. The Hydra2 router core provides Summa with the same integral router technology as the Apollo and Artemis consoles.”

Canon
For the first time in the U.S., Canon will demonstrate its CJ12ex4.3B wide-angle 4K/UHD broadcast lens. The portable CJ12ex4.3B provides optical performance supporting 4K/UHD broadcast production and best-in-class 4.3-mm wide-angle capability suited to creating panoramic 4K imagery. The lens uses the same standard controllers for zoom and focus operations that have been optimized over decades of Canon HDTV-lens development. The lens also uses the standard 20-pin connectors that provide an interface for the digital precision positional information of the zoom, focus, and iris operations required by many external virtual systems.

DiGiCo
DiGiCo’s SD10 Broadcast (SD10B) console package features the new SD-RE Rack, an engine-in-a-box providing connection to a monitor and keyboard/trackball for SD7-style dual-engine redundancy. The British console manufacturer is also highlighting its new “anything in, anything out” Orange Box, which permits full connectivity with Calrec’s Hydra2 network (including labeling) and other devices. Furthermore, DiGiCo will spotlight its new S21, a compact, powerful, and cost-effective desk with slots for two optional DMI cards, including Hydra2, MADI, and other formats.

EVS
New live-production advances being unveiled by EVS include the latest multicam engine capabilities for its XT3 platform, boosting the number of SuperMotion, HD, and 4K/UHD camera configurations available. IP solutions include the DYVI IT-based switcher, which combines an easy-to-use operational interface with high-end functions, suiting it to any studio with multiple control rooms or to multivenue campuses. Fan-engagement multimedia offerings — such as exclusive in-stadium content and multiangle replays — can be instantly delivered to connected devices through the FanCast cloud-based multimedia-distribution platform, providing an easy way for stakeholders to better engage with audiences and increase revenue streams.

Fraunhofer
The audio system developed by the MPEG-H Audio Alliance of Fraunhofer IIS, Technicolor, and Qualcomm allows broadcasters and streaming services to deliver the future of video streaming and TV audio at comparably low bitrates and cost-effectively. Designed to work with today’s broadcast and streaming equipment, the MPEG-H Audio Alliance system features object-based and immersive audio that allows viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences and improves the realism of sound. Furthermore, it will tailor playback to a range of devices and environments.

Grass Valley, A Belden Brand
Grass Valley’s Broadcast Data Center introduces the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of today’s IT networks into broadcast. A key part of the solution is GV Node, the world’s first true, real-time IP processing platform supporting IP and SDI workflows with vertically accurate switching and integrated processing, including integrated Kaleido multiviewing. Also, Grass Valley experts will participate in sessions on IP workflow, UHD for sports production, and story-centric workflows for news.

Harman Studer
Studer will feature the 22-fader option Vista 1 console. Suited for small-space production environments, the Vista 1 provides a comprehensive solution requiring no additional racks and offers integral I/O, DSP, and surround-sound management, including up/downmixing. It uses the same patented user interface as the rest of the Vista family, so existing Vista users will be immediately familiar with all the functionality of the Vistonics and FaderGlow user interfaces, along with such features as true broadcast monitoring, talkback, red-light control, GPIO, N-x (mix-minus) busses, snapshot automation, and DAW control.

Ikegami
Many sports-production professionals will get their first look at Ikegami’s HDK-95C 4K/HD portable digital camera, a highly flexible system in the company’s Unicam HD line. Equipped with native multiformat 2.5 million-pixel, ⅔-in. CMOS sensors, the HDK-95C is now capable of 4K/UHD via the BS-98 and CCU-980 rack-mountable fiber transmission units. The camera also has an upgrade path to 24p and 3G formats, including 1080/60p and 4:4:4 24p. Also on exhibit will be the latest in Ikegami’s monitor line: the new HQLM-3210 4K/UHD 32-in. monitor, an LED screen that features a wide viewing angle and 3840×2160 resolution.

Levels Beyond

FORK v5.5 and Xchange v4.5 are the latest versions of Primestream’s cross-platform software suites for dynamic media management. From 4K/UHD to SD, the latest version of FORK can manage workflow from ingest to playout and features new two-way integrations with Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Apple Final Cut Pro X non-linear editors. FORK Sports Logger delivers a user interface optimized for tagging real-time feeds with the metadata needed to make a quick turnaround: sifting, sorting, and finding the right clips easily. Footage can be stored, shared, edited, reviewed, approved, archived, and prepared from any browser with Xchange 4.5. Ross Video
Ross solutions are used extensively by live sports productions and stadium, event-production, and mobile production organizations around the world.
