The SVG, together with major sports leagues and networks, has been at the forefront of the battle over allowing unlicensed wireless consumer devices to reside within the White Space spectrum. The central problem with the devices is that they will interfere with wireless microphone and communication systems used for both broadcasts and internal needs (such as football coach-to-QB communications, PGA Tour’s Shotlink, NBA referee whistles, and more). It is important that those who rely on wireless microphone and communication systems fight for the integrity of today’s sports broadcast and technology environment and fight for keeping the White Spaces free of unlicensed consumer devices.
In June, 2007, SVG formed the Sports Technology Alliance (STA). STA includes SVG member organizations and sponsors like CBS, DirecTV, ESPN, MLB, NASCAR Media Group, NBA, the NCAA, NFL, NHL, PGA Tour Productions, Shure and more and, together, they have establish a presence within Washington, DC, to help educate and inform members of congress and the FCC about concerns over White Space devices.
