2010 Summit Recap

The Sports Video Group’s fifth-annual League Technology Summit on Dec. 13-14 was a resounding success, drawing a record crowd of more than 700 broadcast professionals to the New York Hilton Hotel for two days of education, discussion, and networking.

Day One of LTS took on a different format from past years, breaking out sessions into five independent workshops: Remote Engineering, Sports 2.0, 3D Production, Audio — 5.1 and Beyond, and Information Technology and Systems. Each workshop aimed to create an interactive, open dynamic in which the attendees were encouraged to participate with workshop leaders in sharing ideas and driving conversation.

The second day kicked off with a rousing keynote speech from Fox Sports President Eric Shanks followed by six panels addressing everything from directing and producing to the evolving truck compound and the state of the industry to 3D and the digital revolution. DirecTV’s SVP of Sports Strategy Steven Roberts finished off the day with a closing keynote speech.

In addition, SVG and its sponsors rolled out more than 50 technology showcases, highlighting the latest and best product offerings from leading companies across the industry.

Keynote Speaker – Eric Shanks, Fox Sports, President

Eric Shanks was named FOX Sports president in June 2010.  At age 38, Shanks is believed to be the youngest president of a broadcast network sports division ever. A six-time Emmy Award-winner, Shanks handles the day-to-day responsibilities of the FOX Sports broadcast network.  He oversees programming, production, field and studio operations, marketing, promotion, communications, business and legal affairs for the network.

Shanks also served as EVP of DIRECTV Entertainment beginning in 2006. Prior to joining DIRECTV, Shanks served as a producer at Fox Sports and as VP of enhanced programming for FOX Television Networks.

Keynote Speaker – Steven Roberts, DIRECTV, SVP of Sports Strategy

Steven Roberts serves as SVP for DIRECTV. Roberts is responsible for developing and executing strategies designed to integrate the traditional DIRECTV entertainment experience on the set-top-box with emerging digital technologies. He is also responsible for the DIRECTV 3D initiative, TV Everywhere, and DIRECTV’s overall sports strategy.

Previously, Roberts had served as VP, Strategic Initiatives, and GM, DIRECTV Entertainment, a position that he held since 2005. Roberts joined DIRECTV in 2005 from Sportvision, where he served as EVP and developed the now ubiquitous “yellow line” for football telecasts. He held a variety of executive-level positions at Sony Corporation from 1995 to 2000.
